Diabetes practices and regimens can vary between countries, hospitals / clinics, & specialists. Therefore what may be encouraged in one setting may not be so recommended in another. This insulin tutorial is not meant to provide a didactic (regimented / fixed) plan for using insulin. Rather the tutorial intends to show some ways of doing things, and provide some explanations as to why things may be done in a certain way. Furthermore it is hoped that this tutorial may encourage people to think a bit more about what insulin regimens are possible, & how they might be improved and / or tailored for an individual. In all this remember that people's mileage may vary - so what works for one person may not be appropriate for someone else. Therefore, as with all medical information on the Web, it is important that you consult your doctor or diabetes specialist before considering acting on any of the information discussed in this tutorial.

Why do I need intensive conventional therapy?

Let's sum up:

Intensive conventional therapy is the best form of treatment because it imitates the natural processes as they operate in men and women with normal metabolism.

Yes, not just 4 insulin injections every day, but 4 blood glucose determinations every day as well.

But there is no other method of treatment which can give you such good stabilization.

No other method of treatment gives you such freedom to choose the amount and timing of your meals.

And there is more to it than that.

This form of treatment is only worthwhile if your diabetes has already been present for some years, if you have large insulin requirements, if you are well trained and well informed about your diabetes, if you are unable to control your diabetes by conventional insulin therapy, if you are dissatisfied with your HbA1c readings, and if you are fed up with having to take so many small meals.

If so, the time has now come to change over from conventional therapy to intensive conventional therapy. However as with everything in this tutorial - if you are contemplating such a change - please do discuss it first with your doctor / diabetes specialist.

Very well, I'll wait until the time comes for me to change over to intensive conventional therapy, after discussion with my doctor.
